History of TCO
- TCO was originally developed in the late 1980s by the research firm Gartner to determine the cost of owning and deploying personal computers. Their initial findings, that PCs cost an enterprise nearly $10,000 per year, caused quite a stir in the technology community and among CFOs.
- Many Linux vice Windows comparisons have been presented. Depending on the Sponsor results are quiet controverse.
- Many Open source vice Closed source comparisons have been presented.
- The Internet provides a lot of TCO-reports about Databases, Server-Architectures, Print-Management, Network areas etc.
Successful configurations by the TCO-Tool
- The Swiss Government calculated at least in 3 departments the costs of a working place (PC).
- Some small and medium-sized businesses used the TCO-Tool in Switzerland (for e.g. wistec, TGW).
- A few diploma thesis used the TCO-Tool for their calculations successfully (incl. plugin-development, for e.g. phw, University Münster).
- Request from all over the world (companies and universities): Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, Brasil, China, etc
- Leprosy Emmaus Switzerland used the TCO-Tool to calculate the treating costs of a bad disease called Buruli. At a WHO conference in 2006 the costs to heal about 10cm^2 on skin (s. CAB, XING) were presented for the very first time.
